MediaLaw.org, the website for the Media Law Resource Center (“MLRC”), is a forum for sharing news, information and resources about media law.  Because MLRC understands that your privacy is important to you, MLRC has established this privacy policy to explain what information is collected on MediaLaw.org and how it is used.

This Privacy Statement is effective June 10, 2009.

Information Gathered by MLRC

For visitors to our website and members of our organization, we log standard technical information such as your IP address and the kind of browser you are using.

In addition, MLRC requires registration for certain services, such as distribution of email newsletters and access to cretain areas of our web site (including our Brief Bank, Publications, and Committee pages).  Users log in to the site with their email address (the username) and a password.  It is also possible for a Member Rep to designate new site users through a form on the site which may collect your contact information (which may include your name, email address, job title, firm, business address, business phone number(s), and other business contact information) and firm/company demographic information (such as postal address information, size of firm, nature of firm practice).  A Member Rep is the individual designated by each member firm to serve as the primary contact for the firm’s MLRC membership.  Individuals may review and/or request a change in their name, password, and firm by filling submitting the form available on the Update Profile page; all requests will be considered by MLRC, and may be submitted to the Member Rep for the individual's firm for confirmation.   All other individual member information, including members’ access to MLRC products and services, may be updated or changed by the Member Reps on this page.  When firm membership is terminated, we terminate the auser accounts of all individuals associated with that firm.  Contact members@medialaw.org or your Member Rep if you would like to update your member information or unsubscribe from email newsletters.

MediaLaw.org uses cookies to administer our site and provide a more tailored and user-friendly service to you.  For example, we may use cookies to save password and account information to facilitate automatic logon and also establish a user’s access privileges, which may vary depending on membership level.

The website also includes order forms for print publications, but these are submitted via email, and no payment information is collected through the website.

Members may also voluntarily upload documents, such as briefs, to MediaLaw.org.  MediaLaw.org’s security is designed to restrict access to these documents to members of MLRC who are logged into the site.

In addition, please note that content posted on the site is available to others.  Accordingly, please do not post on Committee forums or other areas of the site any personal information that you expect to keep private.

MLRC’s Use of Information

The information we collect about you in the course of our relationship is used to provide our site and services to you.  For example, we may use your contact information to send you information about our organization and services or to contact you when necessary.  We may also email our newsletter to members who have requested to receive it.  In addition, we look at technical information in aggregate to analyze traffic to our website, for example to see which portions of the site are more frequently accessed and to gather broad demographic information.  We also may use your personal e-mail information to insure delivery and effectiveness of our newsletter and other e-mails.

MLRC uses individual member information to populate our membership database and create user profiles.  The website is designed to restrict access to this information to MLRC members who are logged in to the site.  Members may opt-out of being listed in the Member Directory.  Contact members@medialaw.org or your Member Rep if you would like to opt-out of being listed in the Directory.
